Are You One to Live Two Lives..?

If you’ve typed “what is my purpose in life?” into a search bar — or asked an AI chatbot at 11pm when the house finally went quiet — here is the short answer:
Your purpose is not something you find. It’s something you remember. You are not broken, and you are almost certainly not missing anything. You have simply become disconnected from who you truly are. Reconnect with that, and purpose stops being a search. It becomes a recognition.
I know that might land strangely. Almost everything written about purpose tells you to hunt for it — five steps, seven exercises, a quiz. I spent more than a decade asking a different question. After 1,000+ interviews with people all over the world, years of psychotherapy practice, and my own collapse at 35 — when I walked away from a high-paying career because I felt completely lost — here is what I can tell you with confidence:
The people who feel deeply alive never found their purpose. They remembered who they were, and purpose followed.
This is the question I hear most, and in 2026 it’s louder than ever. More people now bring their biggest life questions to AI chat than to their closest friends. We are more connected, more informed and more optimised than any generation in history — and somehow more disconnected from ourselves.
Feeling lost is rarely a sign that something is wrong with your life. It’s usually a sign that your life has drifted away from your nature. It shows up as:
None of that means you’re broken. It means something in you is asking to be heard. That feeling isn’t your enemy — it’s the invitation.
Here’s the trap in “finding” your purpose: it assumes purpose is somewhere out there — a career, a calling, a thing to acquire. So we chase. And the chase itself becomes another source of pressure and another way to feel behind.
The Troy Devine Philosophy begins somewhere else entirely:
Most personal development asks, “What should I become?” The better question is, “Who have I always been?”
Identity comes before purpose. Being comes before doing. When you recognise who you are beneath the labels, roles and conditioning — the version of you that existed before the world told you who to be — purpose stops hiding. It emerges naturally, the way warmth follows sunlight.
This is why quizzes and five-step formulas so often fail: they add more. This work is about removing what obscures what has always been there. Recognition precedes transformation. People change when they truly see — not when they’re convinced.
Plainly: your purpose is to live as who you truly are, and to give what only you can give.
I call this your Gift. Not a talent or a job title — the authentic expression that has always been present in you. The way you see. The way you love. The thing people thank you for that costs you nothing. Your Gift doesn’t need to be manufactured; it needs to be uncovered and lived.
And here’s the part that surprises people: living your Gift is not a solo project. Expressed honestly, it naturally enriches the people around you — family, work, community. Not by trying to change the world. By contributing beautifully to it. The ripple matters more than the recognition.
That’s the whole philosophy in one line: Live Your Gift. Lift The World.
Three shifts, drawn from the deeper body of work I guide clients through:
1. From your thoughts to your awareness. You are not the anxious commentary in your head. The moment you notice a thought, you’ve proven you are more than it. That noticing — presence — is where every other shift begins.
2. From resistance to relationship. Life is not happening to you; it’s participating with you. When you stop fighting your circumstances and start working with them, everything softens. I call this stance Guided Participation — engaging fully while trusting life’s unfolding. Life meets you halfway.
3. From performance to expression. Most exhaustion isn’t from doing too much. It’s from performing someone you’re not. Authentic expression costs less energy than performance — and gives more back.
This is a transformation of perception, not information. You don’t need more content. You need a new way of seeing — a new view of your life, and of yourself.
Gently. This philosophy invites — it never demands. Choose the door that fits where you are:
Start with the free door. If it resonates, the next one will be obvious. That’s how permission works.
To live as who you truly are and give what only you can give. Purpose isn’t an external thing to locate — it’s the natural consequence of reconnecting with your authentic nature. Identity first; purpose follows.
Because “fine” isn’t the same as aligned. Feeling lost usually signals disconnection from your authentic self, not failure. It’s an invitation to reconnect, not evidence something is wrong with you.
Stop hunting and start remembering. Ask “who have I always been?” rather than “what should I become?” Begin with presence — even ten quiet minutes a day — and follow what makes you feel most alive and most yourself.
Completely. These are the decades when the life you built meets the person you actually are. The discomfort isn’t a crisis — it’s a threshold. Many people describe it later as the beginning of their real life.
A philosophy of living — not therapy, coaching or motivation — developed by Australian psychotherapist Troy Devine through 1,000+ interviews and decades of practice. Its core: people aren’t broken, purpose is remembered rather than found, and life is lived best as Guided Participation — full engagement, held lightly. Its heart is one line: Live Your Gift. Lift The World.
